On February the 18th, Community manager Ornyx on the World of Warcraft forums came out with a small post/update that Blizzard Entertainment will be ending the support for Windows XP and Vista later this year.
The post goes as follows; “Starting later this year, we will begin the process of ending support for Windows XP and Windows Vista in World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, Diablo III, Hearthstone, and Heroes of the Storm. Microsoft ceased mainstream support for these versions of Windows in 2009 and 2012, respectively, but since a decent portion of our audience was still using them at the time, we continued supporting them. However, there have been three major Windows releases since Vista, and at this point, the vast majority of our audience has upgraded to one of the newer versions.”
“After these older operating systems are no longer supported, the games will not run on them, so we encourage any players who are still using one of the older OSes to upgrade to a newer version. We’ll be rolling out this change on a staggered schedule, and will post further notices as we get closer to making the change for each game.”
Though many have seen it coming, I’m surprised they didn’t do it sooner around the time of Windows 8 came out, but it is as he writes, a good amount of people was still using them. So it’s good on Blizzard that they continued to support them many years later.
I for one are happy that they are coming out to the fans and telling them in all honesty what is going to happen and why. That is why people who still uses Windows Vista have until April 11th before all have vanished into the nether known as the past.
You can follow the link and go read the small post yourself and see what others are thinking about it. I for one just wanted to let you guys know it has happened.
Nevertheless, I am curious on your thoughts about this. Do you see it as a good move or is it bad that they are leaving a portion of their audience behind who still uses XP and Vista, who might refuse to change towards a newer model?
Let me know in the comments, I’m interested to know.
Stay cozy and have a nice day!
